Making Moves

This week Tom Cruise decided to do a little switch up and change PR representation. A little firing and hiring took place. Paul Bloch and Arnold Robinson from Rogers & Crowns are out and Amanda Lundberg from 42 West took their place. Apparently there were no hard feelings and all remain friends because we all know its just business, right?

T by Alexander Wang Posts Up Downtown

Alexander Wang is famous for his ability to make sportswear edgy, unique, and chic. Always the highlight of every fashion week, Wang only jumped into the game in 2007, when he launched his first full collection of women's wear. His ready-to-wear is incredible, but the core foundation of what his brand stands for can be summed up in his T collection, consisting of affordable basics in 12 styles. T by Alexander Wang retails starting at $74 tanks to $85 T-shirt dresses, all in his signature relaxed style (stretched armholes, worn-in looking fabric, heathering details, etc). "It's like sleeping in a T-shirt and then wearing it the next day. It's not this crisp little T out of the dryer. It's draped and kind of wilted," said the designer. We love this destroyed look that is so in right now, and so comfortably chic!

This is not a Gap tee line, so it shouldn't be expected to be advertised as so. The ad campaign for this T collection will not appear in magazines or on posters, but will be plastered all throughout downtown Manhattan. The ads will feature Hannah Holman, photographed by Daniel Jackson, and will be changed every week for a month. This all takes place this Monday (aka tomorrow!), so head down there and feel the energy of these ads for yourself...(and pick up a few T's afterwards)!

A Windowland of Alice Inspiration

This year the classic story of Alice in Wonderland is being retold in more ways than one. Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland has become the inspiration for many fashion designers. In Paris this week French department store Printemps dedicated their windows to the film allowing designers Nicholas Kirkwood, Ann Demeulemeester, Alexander McQueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, ChloĆ©, Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, and Maison Martin Margiela an opportunity to show "Alice" inspired works of art. The window displays will be available to observe through March when the film premieres in theatres worldwide. Unfortunately, Nicholas Kirkwood's Alice in Wonderland-inspired heels are only for window display and they're so beautiful why should anyone wear them. “My favorite character is the Duchess, who at first seems nearly as unpleasant as the Queen of Hearts. But she’s the antagonist of the queen, and at the end was only respectful and friendly, despite her tremendous ugliness. When I was designing this piece, I was seeing Alice running, escaping through the forest destroying her shiny dress.” —Haider Ackermann “I’ve always been intrigued by cutout silhouettes. They are so intriguing, so poetic—the shadow of a soul. They tell everything about a character and they are open to be filled with one’s own imagination.” —Ann Demeulemeester “Running around careless and free in a romantic dress, falling down the rabbit hole, chasing time in a dreamlike state of mind, meeting unexpected characters with many tales to tell—sounds like many a girl’s night out!” —ChloĆ© design team Kirkwood's inspiration for his wonderland work of art was the Mad March Hare, which he made clear by adding a pocket watch to his design to represent the character. Like the movie he took a different approach to his design process. Instead of thinking about line and silhouette he decided to add as much character to the shoes as possible by piling as much as possible on top. Charles Anatases' inspiration came from John Tenniel's original illustration of "Alice" having tea at a table wearing an asymmetrical and theatrical dress with more character than the Walt Disney version. The original Alice (Liddell) the inspiration to the children's classic Alice in Wonderland and to Anatases' "hero," Lewis Carroll is one of the few icons Anatases has left that consistently serve as inspiration. Maison Martin Margiela's inspiration came from the backward theme of the original Alice in Wonderland. He pictured Alice's blue dress in reverse becoming an upside-down dress as she walked through the mirror. A long ball gown reworked upside-down becoming a minidress as the "plumetis" tulle became a veil, the bustier became the miniskirt, and a cage sleeve made of whale-boned velvet is embroidered with pearls, crystals, and recycled jewels.

Jimmy Choo Kicking Down New Doors

With new owner, Tamara Mellon, Jimmy Choo is going through what some would say outrageous changes. The brand has through time become synonymous with the stiletto. Tamara has made many strides since becoming owner of the brand, even designing a special Jimmy Choo line to be sold at H&M. One of her newest innovations may have people confused as to where she plans to take the brand next. Pre-fall 2010 reveals Jimmy Choo's trendy sneakers! You read right Jimmy Choo selling sneakers. With Mr. Choo designing the Jimmy Choo Couture collection lets hope he doesn't have a heart attack at the latest development in his former ready-to-wear collection. The sneakers do still follow one Jimmy Choo rule and that is, they are fabulous! The kicks come in high and low-tops and feature snakeskin and suede detailing. I can't picture them any other way. Jimmy Choo is now not only sexy and seductive but also comfortable. There is a heaven after all, and its going to be on my feet!

The Green Police: Communcation crisis or success?

Super Bowl Sunday means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To the football fan, it means hours of thrilling competition; to hosts and hostesses, it means hours of preparing wings, beer, and dips; and to almost everyone, it means not getting up from the couch during commercial breaks. Super Bowl commercials attract as many, if not more, viewers than the game itself, and audiences continue to laughing out loud while watching their favorite ads via YouTube. Given the huge role that social media has taken on in the world of advertising, marketing, and...well, everything, it is not surprising that many companies are launching Super Bowl social media campaigns, posting their ads on social media video sites, such as YouTube.

One such ad has caused a lot of controversy lately, according to mediabistro.com, due to its reference to a group that was affiliated with a Nazi group during WWII. Audi's campaign, the "Green Police", picture officers that appear in a series of mock PSAs, targeted at teaching people to make smart choices that protect our environment. The video is very funny, and most people of younger generations may not even make the connection, however the German car company is now at risk for a possible communication crisis emergency.
Hill & Knowlton US Director of Risk Management and Crisis Communication Chris Gidez comments, saying, "I think it's a stretch to say it's fatal to the campaign. I think that's overblown." On the other side, Help A Reporter Out Founder Peter Shankman tweeted that, "Nothing good can ever come from a PR campaign involving Nazis." Also, Media Bistro makes a great case, pointing out that a German company like Audi may should want to be very careful about making any sort of small connection with a Nazi group. Oops?

The real question is, is this connection even that big of a deal, and will it make any kind of an impact on Audi's campaign? Well, for one thing, it is causing people to already forget about the point of the campaign to begin with...what was it? Oh ya, saving the planet...I wonder what our friend The Reputation Doctor, Mike Paul, would say about this crisis. We'll ask and get back to you!

CRIES AND WHISPERS: "MGA NABABAHALANG EMPLEYADO NG MARELCO"

(Source: kuryentewatch@yahoo.com and forwarded to this blogger by nvmagturo@yahoo.com.)

Marelco cannot possibly escape scrutiny particularly on financial matters, and when concerned employees of the electric cooperative begin to speak about issues familiar to them, then that deserves our full attention. Emailed message addressed to Marelco's Member Consumers follows:

"Para sa Kaalaman ng Mga Member-Consumers ng MARELCO;

PAPAYAGAN BA NATIN NA ANG KAPABAYAAN AT MISMANGEMENT NG MARELCO AY TAYO ANG MAGPASAN at MAGHIRAP?

G&P's Juicy Gossip

Founders of Juicy Couture, Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy are reportedly stepping away from the brand that all the high school girls are sporting these days. Gela and Pamela won't be out of the lime light though. Did you really think they could just walk away? They are in the works of doing a TV show, book, and movie! Movie, now that could be interesting. Whatever they plan to do, I'm sure it will be a success and everyone will be talking about it.

Settling The Lawsuit on Lead

Recently our favorite affordable stores, H&M and New York & Co., have been in a legal battle with the California Center for Environmental Health. The lawsuit states that the two major companies were violating the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Many accessories were found to have large levels of lead, which as we know is highly toxic. The companies have settled and are required to pay a $35,000 fine and limit the amount of lead paint on the surface of their products. Although New York & Co. has refused to comment on the scandal, H&M has taken full responsibility and states that they will be more active in helping the CEH. Lets hope that the next accessory you buy won't end up poisoning you. That will make you consider shopping ECO-friendly products much more often.

Versace's 2010 Spring Ready to Wear Collection

Besides Gucci, Versace has my favorite Ready to Wear Spring 2010 collections this year. I thought they were absolutely fashion forward and futuristic, inventive, bold, and sexy. I especially loved the colorful prints, intense bright colors, intricate, and fierce platform shoes of the Versace collection. This collection proved that soft and bold patterns can work hand in hand to create beautiful ensembles. Behind the curtain Donnatella Versace spread word of her inspiration for the collection, the highly anticipated film, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. "I loved the idea of that fantasyland," she said. Donnatella has shown from past collections that she can go beyond the sexy, and show a more "mature" collection. No one could evolve her brothers vision with the creativity, confidence, and renown beauty than Donnatella. Now that the season calls for Versace's expertise who can bring sexy back this spring than her. Especially when that season calls for short skirts with sparkling embellishments, plunging chiffon dresses of vivid pastels, studded leather, and glove-fitted suitings with perfect prints. If I could afford it all, I'd buy it all, and that is a fact. Here are some pieces I would die to touch let alone wear.

Couture Collection For Gucci

Frida Giannini has shared her unique talent and modern vision with fashion house Gucci, which has fueled her rise as the creative director. Her feminine take on contemporary fashion has driven the fashion house to great success in menswear, womenswear and accessories. However, creating new ready-to-wear merchandise, as well as new looks for handbags, is not all she plans on doing. It has been said that Giannini wants to start a couture collection for Gucci. A couture line for Gucci is just what the label needs, but can Giannini pull this off? Can she compete with couture genius, Galliano? I have faith in Giannini to create fabulous couture looks, but there’s just one issue. Sources state that you can’t just become a couturier, you have to be certified by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, and membership isn’t granted lightly. Hopefully this will not stop Giannini from pursuing her vision as a couturier. WWD concludes that even though Gucci will not be showing the collection on the Paris runway, the label will sell it on a by-appointment basis and use the couture label to service top celebrities. This will definitely be a new source of fashion for the red carpet!

The Gossip on Michelle Trachtenberg

With Michelle Trachtenberg's success as an evil beauty on Gossip Girl its not shocking to see that we are all catching on to her amazing sense of style. One company that caught on and snagged her before all the others is Coach. With its new affordable line Poppy, Coach is reaching out to those fashionistas that are a little bit of a pinch. Michelle's line for Poppy steers away from the edginess of her Gossip Girl alter ego and exudes romance and attitude. This is a great line for those looking to make their significant other's eyes sparkle on Valentines Day.

Round Two For Siriano

Project Runway's very own Christian Siriano has been a favorite of ours since the show, and now we just love him even more. Siriano will be blessing us with a new fabulous shoe collection exclusively at Payless this Spring! Unfortunately we are unsure if the shoes we are obsessing over above will be the actual ones available in stores. Hopefully Siriano and Payless won't pull any surprises and get these in stores ASAP so we all can be happy shoppers!

Power Crisis: Where do we go from here?

(Rally in Boac: loud and clear message for all the world to see - photo: dan pagulayan)

Should it be cause for concern? “Generation deficiency” was cited by Manila Electric Company (Meralco) as behind the rolling power outages the other day in Metro Manila and other areas in the Luzon grid. The rotating brownouts were reportedly triggered by the forced outage of the 1,200 MW Sual coal-fired power facilities in Pangasinan.

Normal power situation is back in the areas that were affected, but Manila Bulletin reports, thus:

“The power supply situation in the Luzon grid could face “more critical condition” in the coming days with the scheduled maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya facility. Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) confirmed in a text message that Malampaya will be shut down for 30 days starting February 10.

“The reduced contribution of the coal plants is being exacerbated by low availability of electricity from hydroelectric plants because of the El Nino phenomenon.

With the critical power situation, industry players are calling on the government, particularly the Department of Energy, to draw up precautionary measures before the situation gets out of hand.”
(Myrna M. Velasco,1.25.2010 mb.com.ph)

Hmm. Maintenance shutdown. El Nino. What next, then?

Reprise:

As regards Marinduque and to refresh one's memory, the critical power situation here has been repeatedly taken up over a period of two years in many official hearings called by the provincial council, Sangguniang Panlalawigan, that even included an “energy summit”. By mid-September last year the local power institutions have decided as temporary measure to ship to Marinduque from Palawan surplus gensets covered by an unexpired lease agreement between Napocor and a power supplier.

The people’s cry culminated in a church-initiated “truth and transparency” rally headed by the Bishop of the Diocese of Boac, triggered by massive power outages that worsened over a three-month period.

With the arrival of the gensets on October 25, 2009, came publicity stunts staged by grandstanding politicians claiming “final solution”, mum about the short-lived lease-agreement that was set to expire by January 7 or ten weeks later.

(Talk-talk-talk at the NPC Diesel Power Plant in Boac)

With power generation somehow stabilized during the brief Christmas period, even the loud warnings and explanation by SP board member Jose Alvarez, that "everything’s temporary" was largely watered down as expected. Relative calm and peace followed, it was holiday season, let's just say.

With our short memories, quite a few within the power institutions have become even more emboldened now to maintain the electric coop’s “don’t touch us” policy, returning to the cycle of mouthing the same old stories. Their political patrons must be chuckling tounge in cheek.

Needless to say, recommendations and agreements concluded during official meetings have come to naught, it appears.

(The power plant in Balogo as it looks today - single word repeated on yellow ribbon)

Bankcrupt NPP - As admitted by 3i Powergen before the SP body, supported by Marelco, and accepted by SP, said New Power Provider (NPP) is no longer in a capacity to pursue the project due to bankruptcy. How long will the contract rescission process take?

Registration with Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) – Registration with CDA would ensure Marelco’s independence and freedom from control by any agency or political entity, and would exempt it from payment of taxes (VAT, real estate, etc). The provincial government and the local Church have openly espoused Marelco’s registration with CDA. (Marelco admitted that its contract with 3i Powergen was not known to consumers until after signing and was made known to the public only when problems began to surface).

Marelco is also not registered with SEC, therefore not a stock cooperative nor does it operate like one. Hearings revealed that involvement of consumers is limited to attending raffles disguised as “annual meetings” and paying bills.

Officials and Marelco management apparently have it so good at present, they’re not bent on the idea of Marelco registration with CDA and will thwart efforts along this line more defiantly if need be. The issue is control at public expense.

Interim Power Supply Agreement - The signing of an Interim Power Supply Agreement between Marelco and Napocor covering a specific period, one year, two years, three years, whatever, that would ensure uninterrupted power supply, should already be in place by now.

After which, the energy stakeholders could entertain NPP’s, and there are several, who have expressed willingness to offer solutions to the Marinduque situation. To see new power providers in place could take two more years, we must not forget.

(Some names in the Marinduque power saga)

Yes, indeed, there are moves being undertaken by those wishing to lead us to the light at the end of the tunnel, but decidedly at an extremely slow pace. A situation only made worse by smaller fries bent only in keeping their positions intact as they play along with the same power wielders, in the same old rotten way of wheeling and dealing in Marinduque - handed down from one generation to another.

Something really rotten. Endlessly talked about but often hushed by the application of pressure or the color of money or a piece of the pie or all of these.

The Recession: Raising Prices

Since the recession hit most retail stores have been effected in some way or another. Whether doors closed, sale signs went up, or customers weren't shopping everyone was being hurt. One company, probably a favorite to every fashion lover is taking a different approach on staying afloat in this economy. Doors are staying open, but there is definitely no sale signs inside!

Chanel, beloved Chanel will be raising prices and not giving us a lot of time to scramble for our loose change* to try and cough up enough money to buy those classics! Starting February 1st prices will be raised. Some Chanel employees said from $50-$100 while other said that that classic Chanel jumbo bag everyone dies over will be jumping from $2,650 to $2,995! Now that's not just a jump. I'm calling it a skip, hop and a jump!

The bag is beyond beautiful and there is a waiting list at almost every store, some 100 people deep! How on Earth will we get ours before they decide to remark the price tag?! I don't think Chanel is at all worried about the mass demand they are about to create, it seems like they have the recession right where they want it-in their boutiques! It is definitely an interesting concept, but very sad news for girls like me, who have been drooling over the bag since I first spotted that quilted leather bundle of beauty!

Oliver, For All Peoples, For Balmain

Oliver Peoples is anything but shady when it comes to their eye wear...they are constantly in the spotlight as the it designer for sunglasses. The brand announced a while ago that it would be collaborating with another one of our fabulous fashion favorites, Balmain, on a line of exclusive unisex shades. Balmain is always at the front of the fashion world, and it is extremely exiting that they decided to make sunglasses. Well, that time has finally arrived, and these shades are hitting the Spring 2010 runways now! This limited edition Summer 2010 collection is "strong and cool" like the collection, says the New York Times style blog, The Moment. The Moment snapped the first pic of one pair during Paris men's fashion week, and wow did we love them! They are slightly mirrored, aviator-styled and fantastically futuristic. The high bridge is a tough shape to wear, but there is no doubt that every Oliver Peoples and Balmain fan will by running to get their hands on these, male and female. Time is short, so everyone better hustle if you're bright, this is a partnership that cannot be missed- so hot, it's almost blinding!

Beckham Offered to Design Dubai Hotel

Brilliant, sexy, chic and successful are all words that come to mind when I think of Victoria Beckham. She has come a very long way since her Spice Girl days and is looking more amazing than ever! What more can this woman accomplish though? Well, besides her daily duties of being a wife and mother, she is a successful business woman. However, she may be taking a different route with her career. Rumor has it that Beckham has been offered $40 million to help design a luxury hotel on the island Karl Lagerfeld’s developing in Dubai. This is history in the making! The whole idea of Lagerfeld and Beckham working together is phenomenal. Sources state that Beckham was astonished by the offer, however, if she accepts she wants to be very hands on and involved with every aspect of the decision making process. Beckham does have her hands full with being a mom and developing her fashion collection, but will this stop her from a once in a lifetime opportunity?

Pharrell Is All About Lanvin

Today, it is known to be the oldest French fashion house in operation, dressing Paris’s upper class and celebrities such as, Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston. That’s right my fashion lovers, I’m talking about Lanvin! Founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889, there has been nothing but success with this label. Lanvin has evolved into a fashion empire, consisting of womenswear, menswear, fragrance, jewelry, handbags and shoes.

This past weekend, Lanvin premiered its Menswear A/W 2010 collection in Paris, where celebrity guests, Kanye West, Amber Rose and Pharrell Williams attended. The show must have had an inspirational affect on Pharrell, because he requested to work for the brand. After the Lanvin Fashion Show, Pharrell approached artistic director Alber Elbaz to propose his interest in being apart of the Lanvin team. "It would be an honor," Pharrell said. Pharrell told WWD that he would be interested in designing a luggage line or fronting a Lanvin campaign. Does he really have it in him and will Alber Elbaz consider this? I think Pharrell will benefit the brand, being that he has co-founded two clothing lines of his own and has collaborated with Louis Vuitton. I would love to see what flavor Pharrell can bring to the Lanvin fashion house!

Ann Taylor Gets Under It All

Ann Taylor has always been known for its classic style, but with the changing times the brand is revamping its image and giving it a little edge. Along with some edginess every woman desires to be sexy and Ann Taylor has figured out a way to exude such sex appeal. The brand will be collaborating with lingerie brand Eberjey to create what will be known as Bluebird. Bluebird will be launching in Ann Taylor stores on February 2, 2010. The sexy, yet tastefully feminine lingerie line will be aiming to bring in a younger customer to the classic brand.
