Betsey Johnson Does The Plaza Hotel

Next time you're in New York City and looking for a place to stay, you might want to consider The Plaza Hotel.

This past Thursday the famed Plaza Hotel unveiled its new Eloise Suite, paying homage to one of its most famous fictional residents.

The suite, designed by Betsey Johnson, is gorgeous. Alight in different hues of pink and accented with white and gold, the room is a feminine dream.

True, it will cost a pretty penny to stay the night (and by a pretty penny, I mean $3,040), but if you have an occasion, the money to spare, and a daughter who is an Eloise fan, it might be worth your while.

Because Some Days You Need More Than Dunkin Donuts To Get You Going

It's no secret to anyone that the PR industry is demanding.

It takes its toll day after day, while you try your best to secure positive press for your clients. There are no mental health days. There are rarely vacations. The press is a 24 hour machine, and so you must be too.

I've seen the following video making the viral rounds for the past few weeks, and I thought today would be the perfect day to remind you all how to stay positive when you're tired, sick, aggravated at that one press contact who won't return your calls, etc.

So when you wake up tomorrow, before you rush out to take over the world and scratch some tasks off your never-ending to-do list, consider this spunky tot, Jessica, and her daily affirmations:

Of Paye and Pulang Lupa

PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR IN MARINDUQUE
(Of Paye and Pulang Lupa)

(Photo of the American landing in Laylay, the soldiers seen here wading ashore)

The most comprehensive account of the U.S. Army’s pacification of Marinduque from the period April 1900 to April 1901 was published in the Journal of Military History 61 (April 1997), in an paper written by Andrew J. Birtle.

The said paper begins with the following gripping lines:

“The severity with which the inhabitants have been dealt would not look well if a complete history of it were written out”.

”So wrote Philippine Commissioner William Howard Taft concerning the U.S. Army's campaign on the island of Marinduque during the Philippine War of 1899-1902. The pacification of Marinduque was characterized by extensive devastation and marked one of the earliest employments of population concentration in the Philippine War, techniques that would eventually be used on a much larger scale in the two most famous campaigns of the war, those of Brigadier Generals J. Franklin Bell in Batangas and Jacob H. Smith in Samar..."

The Birtle article provides the first detailed account of the story that Taft, the future governor of the Philippines and President of the United States, had felt "was best left untold.”

Paye Day on July 31

Marinduque marks the Battle of Paye Day on July 31, one of two historical holidays commemorating the revolutionary struggle on the island in 1900 during the Philippine-American War. The Paye episode was described as a "skirmish" in American journals (Wells). Local accounts refer to it as a "battle". Paye is a sitio of Brgy. Balimbing in Boac's Ilaya-side.

(Boac Church. Company A was paralyzed and retired to this church)

Birtle describes the Paye episode in the following terms:

"In fact, the American hold over Marinduque was quite tenuous. Not only were the two companies of the 29th USVs poorly led, but with fewer than one hundred men at each location neither garrison could adequately protect itself and undertake offensive operations at the same time.

Moreover, Bates did not deem the garrison important enough to rate anything more than sporadic naval support. Without a ship to transport men and relay messages, the two outposts could not readily support one another. Coordination was further impeded by Manila's failure to appoint an overall commander for the island...

The precariousness of the American position became evident on 31 July, when Teofilo Roque's Guerrilla ambushed one of Lieutenant Wells' rare forays into the countryside.
Roque's force wounded two Americans and captured two others before the patrol escaped.

That night the victorious guerrillas set fire to a portion of Boac in an effort to drive the Americans out. In this they failed, though many of Boac's inhabitants fled, leaving the town virtually deserted. The episode also succeeded in paralyzing Company A, which retired to the church, venturing out only twice over the next two months.”

Birtle also described what followed six weeks later in the famous “Battle of Pulang Lupa". The Battle of Pulang Lupa is considered the first major victory of Filipinos over the Americans during the second phase of the Philippine Revolution.

Writes Birtle:

“On 11th September, Shields decided to take advantage of a visit by the gunboat U.S.S. Villalobos. Leaving Lieutenant Wilson and forty-one men to hold Santa Cruz, he loaded fifty-one enlisted men, a hospital corps-man, and his black servant onto the gunboat and sailed to Torrijos, disembarking that evening. The next day he had his first contact with insurgent forces since his company had been on the island, dispersing a band of twenty guerrillas and destroying their cuartel.

On the thirteenth (September), Shields led his detachment into the mountains with the intention of returning to Santa Cruz. Well informed about Shields's movements, Shields walked right into the ambush. A fire fight ensued for several hours before Shields ordered a retreat into a covered ravine. What began as a slow withdrawal quickly turned into a race down a rocky stream bed, as the Americans scrambled to escape the pincers that were moving to surround them (until) Shields fell seriously wounded.

After ordering that a message be passed to the senior NCO to lead the command out of the closing trap, Shields raised a white flag to surrender himself and the other wounded... the entire force lay down its arms. All told, the Insurgents killed four Americans and captured fifty, six of whom, including Shields, were wounded...

After months of hiding, Abad in a few short hours had destroyed nearly a third of the entire American garrison on Marinduque.

Confirmation of Shields's defeat sent shock waves through the American high command. The episode was one of the worst reversals suffered by U.S. forces in the Philippine War.”

Pulang Lupa

What is being described in the American annals as the defeat that “sent shock waves through the American high command” and “one of the worst reversals suffered by U.S. forces” was the Battle at Pulang Lupa that transpired six weeks after Paye.

Commemorating historic events contribute immensely in promoting historical appreciation and promote a deeper sense of identity particularly among the young.

One may raise the need to exercise caution in viewing such episodes in a broader perspective, but no matter, the Paye and Pulang Lupa accounts are important in recollecting the stories of local struggle during the second phase of the Philippine revolution.

It's in the Bag: Our Must Haves for an orGLAMic Summer!

Just because July is almost over doesn't mean there isn't time to embrace the season with some summer sun this weekend!

We caught up with Sandra Sanchez (the gorgeous woman pictured above who founded orGLAMic, her site for sustainable luxury living), where she dished on why it's important to her to be eco-friendly:

"It's important to be eco-minded while purchasing new products because every small item makes a different. Whether it is something vintage, or something made out of recycled materials or organic or sustainable fabric, each eco-conscious product that you buy in place of a conventional one affects our planet and our personal health. orGLAMic features products that are eco-friendly yet that don't compromise style."

We couldn't let her get away without telling us what should be in our style repertoire this weekend, so here you have Sandra's summer picks:
"Must Haves for an orGLAMic Summer:"

Sea Bag totes:

Made of our recycled sails, these durable, machine-washable bags are eco-friendly and chic. Available in small, medium, and large and in seemingly-infinite colors and designs, each bag is unique. Not only is this super-flattering, but it gives me the opportunity to spread the idea that eco-friendly can be fashion-forward!
Jungle Gurl bikinis:

Inspired by model/actress Natalie Golonka's travels around the world (and all the great scarves, clothes and fabrics she picked up along the way!) these one of a kind bikinis are made from recycled vintage garments and are uber-flattering in their simple, string-bikini styling. Vintage-lovers Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe are both fans of this line.

Intelligent Nutrients Certified Organic Anti-Aging Mist:

All of the products from this eco-friendly, organic line are divine, but this mist is a summertime favorite. While intended for use as a prep for the Anti-Aging Serum, you can also toss this into your beach bag as a great mid-day pick up. The light mist is refreshing and free of silicone, parabens, petrochemical and synthetic fragrances - orGLAMic indeed!

Miu Miu - I love you

Ah, September - a fashionista's favorite time of year. Boasting Fashion Week and Fashion's Night Out among other things, September is a time to marvel at beauty, creation, and magic. And thankfully, September now arrives in August.

If you're a devoted reader of fashion magazines, you know that the September issues are the most important to come out all year - and you'll know that the issues actually arrive a month earlier. I, for one, cannot wait to grab my Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and flip through the glossy pages.

But, alas, it's not September (or even August) yet. Until then, I get my fashion fix on sites like the Cartoon Styles blog (http://cartoonstyles.blogspot.com/). Just a few days ago, I came across the new Miu Miu ads for the Fall/Winter 2010/11 seasons.

Miu Miu, I love you - that is all I can say. I thought I knew what magnificence was when I saw your shoes with birds in flight painted on the heels last season - that is, until I saw the bows on your collars and metal flower details on your garments.

That is when I realized what magnificence truly is.

I'm as much of a fan of utilitarian looks as the next girl, but I silently cheered when I discovered that feminine touches are back with a pretty vengeance! Hurrah! Bring on the seductive hues and lace details! Surprise me with bows and pleating! Dazzle me with sequins and feathers and voluminous shapes!

With only a few weeks until the September issues hit the stands, I can relax knowing that femininity is once again reigning supreme and rearing its regal and beautiful mane.

Bragman and A&E to Showcase Celebs "Coming Out" This Fall

Media Bistro announced today that well-known Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman has been working with JUMA Entertainment and A&E to produce a one-time special about public figures coming out of the closet. Bragman is no stranger to this feat, as he has helped celebrities such as Chaz Bono and Meredith Baxter come out.

The special is due out some time later this year, but there are few other details available as the producers are currently in the throes of casting. Bragman tells Media Bistro that the title of the special as of this moment is Coming Out.

While some may view this publicizing of a very sensitive time in a person's life as exploitative, Bragman makes it clear that his motivations are purely innocent. He emphasizes that, "(t)his is the first chance I had to do something that I found empowering and that could change the world a little."

To those who are still a little shell-shocked at the idea, read up on Bragman and you will find you should not be so surprised. One of his 10 Commandments of Public Relations (via his web site) is There is No Wall Between Public and Private.

Howard Bragman founded Bragman Nyman Cafarelli PR and Marketing, which was bought by Interpublic in 2001. He founded the Fifteen Minutes PR agency in 2005.

Wadsen joins a team that already includes, as Media Bistro points out, Senior Vice President of CBS News Communications Jeff Ballabon and Couric's personal publicist Matthew Hiltzik.

Design Intervention: Which Designers Will Grace the Silver Screen This Fall?

What would you do if Georgina Chapman and Damon Salvatore shared drinks on an episode of The Vampire Diaries? Or what if Donatella Versace gave Brooke Davis fashion advice on One Tree Hill?

Seem too awesome to comprehend? Well, rumors have it that some of our favorite fashion patrons will be gracing the silver screen on some of our favorite shows.

To address the most outlandish rumor I’ve heard, it cannot be confirmed nor denied that Karl Lagerfeld will be appearing on Gossip Girl this season (even though he has been spotted strolling around with the lovely Blake Lively).

However, you might be able to catch a glimpse of Diane von Furstenberg next to Serena and Blair – the cast has been spotted filming outside her Meatpacking District store this past week. As the show is equal parts fashion and drama it is no surprise that a famous face in fashion might make an appearance every now and then – especially since Tory Burch made it on-screen last season.

But until we know for sure, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Which fashion designer would YOU love to see and on which show? Send your answers to msmpr24seven@gmail.com. And don't forget to follow us on Twitter (@msmpr24seven)!

Because Real Life Isn't a Lifetime Movie or Hello, I am a Modern-Day Abolitionist

Sorry I'm keeping you waiting til late tonight, readers. (I know, I know - but hey, I'd like to pretend there are some readers waiting patiently on their laptops for me to update).

Confession: I just finished watching Jennifer Love Hewitt's Lifetime original movie The Client List.

First thought: Wow, that's pretty convenient that "Sam" has perfect recall and can remember all 69 of her clients. (Isn't it also convenient that Sam has 69 clients?)

Second thought: I wonder what implications this has on young girls who are watching this movie.

While I thought the movie was fine - pretty predictable storyline with a neatly resolved ending - I have to wonder: does this glorify the prostitution industry?

Spoiler alert
: All the women got off with a fine and 30 nights in jail in exchange for giving up the names of the "johns" they saw regularly.

As I'm sure none of you know, human trafficking is a cause very close to my heart. Because I know it is a term often thrown around, I'll paste the definition of sex trafficking (taken from the 2010 Trafficking in Persons report):

When an adult is coerced, forced, or deceived into prostitution – or maintained in prostitution through coercion – that person is a victim of trafficking. All of those involved in recruiting, transporting, harboring, receiving, or obtaining the person for that purpose have committed a trafficking crime. Sex trafficking can also occur within debt bondage, as women and girls are forced to continue in prostitution through the use of unlawful “debt” purportedly incurred through their transportation, recruitment, or even their crude “sale” – which exploiters insist they must pay off before they can be free. It is critical to understand that a person’s initial consent to participate in prostitution is not legally determinative: if they are thereafter held in service through psychological manipulation or physical force, they are trafficking victims and should receive the benefits outlined in the Palermo Protocol and applicable domestic laws.

It should also disturb you to know that as many as 2 million children are sexually exploited as trafficking victims at any time around the globe.

I understand that it's probably a tad bizarre that that is what I'm thinking of as I relax and watch the Lifetime channel, but it is what it is. I think the movie didn't explore the women's backgrounds realistically enough. One woman loved sex and described this as her perfect job, while one (supposedly legal) girl said she ran away from home to audition for American Idol and couldn't return home to her Pentecostal family. Now, that's all fine and dandy for a Jennifer Love Hewitt movie, but in the real world, things are nearly as picture-perfect.

If you want to learn more about human trafficking, please visit The A21 Campaign's web site at www.theA21Campaign.org. To listen to the 2010 TIP Report (and to see the supporting documents), please visit: http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2010/142747.htm.

I know that's a lot of heavy information to leave you with so late at night, but it's an issue that people need to know about - and one that doesn't stop when the night falls.

@ClaireMBiggs

Little known fact: Did you know you can see human trafficking portrayed in such music videos as Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Mr. J Medeiros' "Constance"?

Support the Third Coast: Because America Doesn't Just Run East and West

So I was sure my next post was going to be about something food-related because a) who doesn't love food? and b) I'm snacking while I write. I was sure, until I took a blog-break to browse through Perez Hilton's latest posts.

As you know, I live on the Third Coast. Now, that term may not mean anything to you. You may not have heard it before. You may be under the impression that the only coasts America claims are the West and the East.

But you'd be wrong.

The Third Coast is unique. Its inhabitants are some of the most generous, talented, and resilient of our nation. I grew up here, I work here, I learn here, and I can honestly say that I'm proud to be from one of the states along the Third Coast: Louisiana.

But I don't claim the Louisiana the rest of the United States seems to focus on: I don't claim the Louisiana that can only boast of being the birthplace of Britney Spears (why doesn't anyone mention the Mannings? Ellen? Randy Jackson? Ian Somerhalder?); I don't claim the Louisiana that only empowers corrupt businessmen and politicians; I don't claim the Louisiana that is lacking in health care and education but gaining strides in crime and childhood obesity.

I claim the Louisiana that boasts food you can't even imagine tasting (have you heard of Emeril? Yeah, I claim him). I claim the state that has withstood Katrina and Rita and the oil spill - offering neighbors a smile and a helping hand. We may be tired, worried, and fearful, but we are nothing if not hopeful.

This video Perez posted is beautiful - and I'm not just talking about the people and the scenery. The message itself is one that I was fortunate enough to grow up hearing but that many seem to forget: your one voice counts for so much more than you know.

Please watch the video, take in the message, and sincerely consider signing the petition. On behalf of my home, the entire Third Coast, and every other resident of the US who has had to face natural or man-made disasters, please sign the petition.

Everyone who signs the petition during the next few days (I'll give you a Sunday deadline), I will post your names (or hometowns if you wish) in the blog that night. Please be sure to send me your name via Twitter (@ClaireMBiggs of @Msmpr24seven) or via email (Msmpr24seven@gmail.com) with what you want to be listed as on the blog and a short message of why you're signing the petition. (Ex. - one of the celebs signs for the pelicans).

I don't know about you, but I'm signing for beignets. And crawfish. And gumbo...See, I knew I'd sneak food in here somehow.

But in all seriousness, I'm signing for hope for a better, cleaner, safer future. Please consider doing the same.

@ClaireMBiggs @Msmpr24seven

Special thanks to Perez Hilton for posting the video as well as the people who spent the time to lend their voices. (Some include: Blake Lively, Sandra Bullock, the Mannings, Dave Matthews, Lenny Kravitz, etc.) To watch the video, visit: http://perezhilton.com/2010-07-20-save-the-gulf-be-the-one. To sign the petition, visit http://www.restorethegulf.com/.

Thank you.

Lindsay Lohandcuffs

The wait is over (again).

Lindsay Lohan was taken to jail today serve her prison sentence for violating parole. While it's unclear how many days she will actually serve in the slammer, it's clear that we're not going to be able to about much else considering everything will be documented - who is going to visit her, if she's receiving special treatment, etc.

If you have nothing else to do and, for whatever reason, can't get enough of Lindsay's drama, I'd say your best bet for the most timely information is HollywoodLife.com. They were outside the courthouse this morning, have been breaking news on her case (and Mel Gibson's) before anyone else, and Bonnie Fuller will be on your TV discussing the insanity following Ms. Lohan's predicament.

I know I may sound a bit harsh, but honestly, I have nothing against LL. I've never met her, and I wasn't at any of her court dates (and I certainly didn't follow her to her alcohol classes or to the clubs). However, it wears on me when all I hear from her camp is that her prison sentence is the reflection of some grave error in the justice system. As far as I'm concerned, Lindsay violated her probation and is serving out the consequences. While I do feel sorry that she's going to be spending time in jail - something, thankfully, most of us never have to face - I'm not going to sit here and pretend like she didn't do anything or doesn't deserve this treatment because she's a public figure.

Anyway. All ranting and raving aside, there are more important things happening as we speak! Check the next post for more details, and I'll promise to try to keep the Hollywood prison shoptalk to a minimum.

@ClaireMBiggs

What's better than being on the set of Gossip Girl?

Sorry I've been MIA since Friday, readers! Continental has unfortunately not equipped their planes with wifi - they also don't have pillows or blankets on any of their flights, just so you know.

Before I start the rant, I mean blog, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who read the blog and voted in the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World contest. I would also like to wish a sincere congratulations to GGG for winning the competition. Even though I still believe Eleisha Eagle should have won, it is an incredible victory nonetheless.

Now, to the heart of the matter: last Thursday was a banner day for this blogger; so many exciting things happened that it was hard to concentrate on things like packing, sleeping, or anything else that was vital to my sanity during the past three days.

First, I got offered a job during the semester. I know, why should you care? Honestly, you shouldn't care too much about my new job. But, you should care about the importance of keeping in touch with potential employers. Last year I applied for a position on my school's campus with Verizon. Although I didn't get that position, I kept in touch with the woman in charge of hiring and voila! New job! Sometimes I believe PR stands for persistence - so I thought I would share the necessity of being patient and persisting.

Second, I got to hang out on the set of Gossip Girl for the latter part of the day. There are too many fabulous - and confidential - details to explain here, but let me just say for the people that think Gossip Girl is losing its edge: you could not be more wrong.

Finally, while I thought there could be nothing more exciting that getting to hang around Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester, I found out there was: the news that BP had (finally) managed to stop the oil leak - for the time being.

As a Louisiana native, I've got to say that this news brought a bizarre rush of emotions: relief that the leak had stopped, anger that it had taken this long, worry that the cap wouldn't hold, etc.

Even now, it's hard to sit here and not shake with anger with all that is wrong with the oil leak and the way it has been handled in the past few months - by the media, government, BP, etc. I'll try to leave out my own personal opinions, but as a Louisianian, I can say that we're not holding our breath that the problems in the Gulf are going to be solved any time soon. Plus, there's always hurricane season to look forward to...

I would like to thank all the celebrities that helped with the Gulf telethon and in raising awareness through their charity work, social media sites, etc: Sophia Bush, Ian Somerhalder, Alyssa Milano, Jenny McCarthy, Chelsea Handler, Austin Nichols, Kathy Griffin, Nicole Richie, to just name a few. It's easy to care about something when nations and other governments are concerned, but it speaks volumes when you lend your names and voices to a cause when it is not timely, newsworthy, or popular. Thank you all so much.

@ClaireMBiggs

Fly Like Ms. Eagle - (And Vote for Her!!)

Hello, loves!

First, happy Friday!! Hope everyone is as lucky as I am and has summer Fridays!

Second, here is the exclusive interview I promised featuring Eleisha Eagle:

1. I’m reading over your EPK and I’ve got to say – you’ve done incredible things over the past few years. Which of your many accomplishments are you most proud of?

I'd have to say I am most proud of my benefit concerts. Every year in my hometown (Lake Charles, LA) I put on a concert to raise money for non-profit organizations that benefit children. In the four years of its existence, Eleisha Eagle in Concert has raised $90,000 -- the money has gone to building classrooms, helping children with special needs, teaching kids to read, etc. I am incredibly appreciative and humbled by the amount of support that Lake Charles has given me, and the concert allows me to give back.

2. I’m listening to Neither Here Nor There Right Now. What’s your favorite song on the album (mine are Hooked and Goodbye)?

Picking a favorite song is like picking a favorite child for me, because I write all of the songs myself. There are definitely some that I like to sing more than others, but I don't have a particular favorite.

3. I’ve seen this description of you quite a bit: “She plays her electric piano with the skill of Rufus Wainwright and the quirkiness of Feist. Her voice – which exudes Norah Jones’ clarity and rivals Pavarotti’s projection – hits the back of the wall when she sings.” For everyone out there that’s never heard your music, how accurate is that statement?

Everyone who sees me play has a difficult time describing my music. The one comment that I hear more than anything is, "It's so refreshing!" That and, "How does such a big voice come out of such a little person?" I guess the Pavarotti part of the description comes from the latter statement, and the other comparisons are a nod to original pianist/singer/songwriters who have their own unique sounds. I suppose the description is less about a specific sounding genre and more about artists who have paved their own ways by staying true to their vision.

4. Who are your musical influences?

I am a HUGE fan of Nina Simone, and find myself listening to a lot of music from the twenties and thirties . When I first started writing, I was influenced by Ben Folds and Fiona Apple. Now, I listen to everything that I possibly can and pay attention to what makes my soul stir.

5. You have 10 Steps to World Domination? Tell me about that.

I was asked to write an article for a small magazine a few years ago. At that point , the DYI approach was new to the music scene and educational resources were minimal. I saw it as an opportunity to share the lessons I had learned as an independent artist with other aspiring artists.

6. So you do it all: play instruments, sing, write your own music, and – rumor has it – all while wearing five inch heels. Why is that? Napoleon complex or just a big fan of shoes? And which pair of shoes is your favorite?

Well, I might absolutely love shoes. Just maybe. :) And my feet are the only thing you see when I'm sitting behind the keyboard, so I figured I'd go all out with the foot apparel. I think my favorite pairs of shoes are a bright yellow patent leather pair from ALDO and a turquoise suede pair from Steve Madden.

Hope you all know a little more now about this talented Louisiana songstress! Don't forget to vote for her (or GGG is you feel so inclined) in the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World contest (which ends TONIGHT at midnight): http://indierockvstheworld.sonicbids.com/UniversalHeadToHead.aspx?b=25

And so you know, Eleisha is working in Florida with a non-profit right now and is - unsurprisingly - extremely busy. Special thanks to her for offering to do the interview and for answering what questions she could!

Spread the News, I'm Leaving Today (Well, Tomorrow, But You Get the Point)

Here it is, the moment I've been dreading. I'm slowly - but all too surely - approaching my last 24 hours in New York City before I return home to Louisiana.

Farewell, subways and taxis and reliable means of public transportation! Au revoir, pop-overs from David Burke's and Chinese sausage fried rice from Buddakan!

New York, you've been so good to me (minus that one purple gum on my white shorts incident, but I guess I can let that slide)! You might have been unbearably hot some days and annoyingly stormy on others, but it seems you were as happy to have me as I was to be here!

It's funny. Eight weeks ago when I moved here for an internship, I never thought I'd miss things like getting on the metro every morning (considering how disgusting I thought it was at first). I never thought I'd exhibit signs of a "real NY-er," but alas, people have come to find that they better not stop and gawk at landmarks when I'm on a mission. Like a true city-dweller, I huff impatiently, brush past them angrily, and glare over my shoulder threateningly - it's an art, really.

I never thought I'd meet so many nice people - even though most still assure me I'm "too nice".(apparently New Yorkers stopped apologizing ages ago). Everyone I've met has never seem put off when I ask where a certain train or avenue or building is. And, as you know, I've had to ask often. (I still consider it a small, personal victory whenever guess the correct direction to head in after I get off the subway.)

Point being, New York, I'm going to miss you. Sure, your traffic is annoying and your cab drivers are kamikazes. And yes, Lebron did choose the Heat over the Knicks (which you'll never forgive, I'm sure). But, honestly, it's been a blast.

Have no fear, faithful readers! I'll still update regularly! I just wanted to brief you on the circumstances under which I'll be writing - just in case I throw you threw a loop if a "y'all" slips out every now and then.

Don't panic, I've just crossed the Mason-Dixon line...but I promise to come back soon.

So you know, here's what you can look forward to:
- an exclusive interview with Eleisha Eagle
- information on orGLAMic, so you know what products are the best - before anyone else
- fast-paced, punchy stories about what's going on in the world of fashion, PR, entertainment, world news, etc.
- including: Argentina's decision to legalize gay marriage; the oil spill supposedly being plugged; what charities your favorite celebs support

Marinduque National High School new building

Former governor Jose Antonio N. Carrion obtained financial assistance from DepEd through former Sec. Jeslie Lapuz for the construction of a new school building at the Marinduque National High School where Carrion was once a student. Phases 1 & 2 of the school was finished in time for the opening of school year 2010-2011.

Carrion announced during a visit to the school in June that DepEd's financial assistance of P 10-million for the construction of phases 3 & 4 will be released shortly.

(Carrion hands over cheque to MNHS principal, Myrna Sajo, as PTCA president, Dennis Recalde, teacher and students look on).

Carrion also turned over a P 2.5-million cheque to MNHS principal, Myrna Sajo as part of the provincial government's counterpart funding for the new building. Carrion ended his term on June 30, 2010.

I'm Only In It for the Cupcakes

There are two questions I get asked with annoying frequency:

1. Do you have anything to drink besides Dr Pepper?

and

2. Why are you on Twitter?

As you can imagine, the first question is usually asked by people who either a) don’t know me at all or b) or are having some kind of psychotic break with reality and are experiencing some kind of world where I would have something to drink other than Dr Pepper. (For those still trying to keep up, the short answer? No, I don’t have anything other than Dr Pepper).

The second, unfortunately, is usually asked by people by own age who could actually benefit by expanding their social media horizons – aka not just being on Facebook. It’s funny too, because you would think I wouldn’t have to twist peoples’ arms in the PR INDUSTRY to explore other facets of the media – crazy, I know.

The short version of my “Why You Should Be On Twitter” speech goes a little something like this:

“Twitter is better than Facebook because (NOTE: always start a speech like this; because now people are actually listening) there aren’t nearly the technical difficulties when you’re only dealing with 140 character updates. Also, Twitter actually cares about its users because tweets were made for the mobile age – 140 characters is the maximum for most phone companies for characters in a single text message – therefore saving your minutes and texts per month.

If you’re on Facebook to stalk (and let’s face it, you probably are), Twitter will open a whole new world to you. No longer are your favorite celebrities limited to fan pages and “likes.” No, you can “follow” them and read their tweets as they tweet them! Never again will you wonder what your favorite celeb is eating for lunch – oh no. You’ll know, and what’s better? They will probably be a twitpic too! Ever wonder what’s running through your celebs mind when he/she’s out partying or when he/she is about to go to bed (Kristin Chenoweth is particularly funny – especially when she takes Ambien)? Now. you’ll. know. Simple, yes?

Now for my less superficial, more philanthropic reasons: thankfully, non-profits are some of the most adept at adapting to new technologies. For example, To Write Love On Her Arms (@TWLOHA) and Invisible Children (@Invisible) are very active on Twitter. I follow the organizations, their founders, and the people they work with. It keeps me up to date on what’s going on, what they have coming up, etc.

Last, but certainly not least – actually, this is probably the most important reason – I’m only in it for the cupcakes.

Yep, you read that right – cupcakes. Thanks to a friend, I was introduced to Sweet Wishes Cafe (@SweetWishesCafe) on Twitter. It’s kind of sad, but there is nothing I love more than (no, not cupcakes) seeing local businesses using social networking. And other businesses need to take note and pay attention, because SWC is raising the bar – they just offered me cupcakes for free when I come by to visit.

Now if that’s not good PR, I don’t know what is.

Like I said, pay attention.

(And yes, that was the short version of my speech.)

Oh, what am I thinking? You’re probably still too busy trying to figure out why you only have so many fans on your business’ fan page or why Facebook chat keeps signing off on you to read this blog. Meanwhile, Sweet Wishes Cafe has a guaranteed new customer and a lifelong Twitter follower.

Your loss.

For more information on SWC, check out their web site here: http://www.sweetwishescafe.com/. Or send them a tweet - they'd be happy to talk to you!

The Latest Details on Fashion's Night Out

Fashion's Night Out is coming up, and I could not be more excited!

Wait. That's a lie.

I would be so much more excited if I could turn into a socialite or A-list celeb for that one week in September. Ah, backstage access, designer previews, front row seats at the season's couture shows...what a life that would be!

Oh well, back to reality.

Fashion's Night Out just announced via Facebook that their FNO gear will be available to purchase online and in stores on August 16. You're going to have to check out their web site (www.fashionsnightout.com) for the locations, but let's face it, we'll all pretty much do anything to feel like a part of the biggest shopping event of the year.

Although only in its second year, FNO - in my opinion - has already been a wild success. Yes, it combines my two favorite things, fashion and charity work, and turns the NYC shopping scene into a big party. But really, what's not to love?

How about that all the fashion heavyweights are full-force behind it? From Anna Wintour to Diane von Furstenberg to Michael Kors, everyone is rallying behind the industry for a good cause.

Be sure to tune in to your Facebook news feed and Twitter profile for any updates on FNO - which is slated for September 10 - and make sure you "shop for something good."

Penelope: Living La Vie Bardem

Since yesterday's posts were entertainment-heavy, I'll try to lay off that tonight. But just so you know what's going on:

As I'm sure most of you know, Wednesdays mean one thing: weeklies. Before you grabbed your morning coffee, you probably stopped off at Hudson News in the Grand Central terminal to sneak a peak at which celeb was on the cover of People (Carrie Underwood) or US Weekly (Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston).

Wait, who am I kidding? NOTHING comes before caffeine in the morning.

Point being, there was some fairly interesting celebrity news breaking today. Did you know Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are now Mr. and Mrs? Or that Bristol and Levi are apparently going to give an engagement another go?

I'm sure you've heard of the many stars who tied the knot this weekend - LaLa and Carmelo, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, and Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher.

But did you hear that the leaked Mel Gibson tapes were supposedly tampered with? That's the story according to HollywoodLife.com. Or that Lindsay Lohan is apparently trying to find a new lawyer - for free (credit goes to Perez for that one)?

Well, now you know. I'll keep this specific post short so you can go drool over your Elle (kudos to @ErinKaplan and the Elle team on the gorgeous Drew shoot) and skim your Vogue (have to admit, not a fan that Gwyneth is on the cover - I mean, she was just on British Vogue a few months ago).

Because Hollywood Isn't Always Where It's At...

Sometimes you have to move out of California and get some perspective on the rest of the world once in a while.

I know, shocking, no? Coming from the girl who just uploaded a whole post dedicated to two Hollywood troublemakers.

But seriously, there is more going on this week than just that.

For example, how many of you are excited for Michael Cera's new movie coming out in August: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? (Raises hand, bounces up and down wildly).

Why, yes, I am highly anticipating the film...but not for reasons you might think.

I'll be honest with you, friends, I have no idea what the movie is about - but that's ok, because I never claimed to know anything about it. What I do know, however, is that there is a contest going on right now involving the home video release that is rocking the online community.

For the past few weeks, talented bands and singer/songwriters have been calling their fan bases into action to vote them into the finals of the contest - and now only two remain: Eleisha Eagle and Gorgeous Get a Gun.

The prize, you ask?

The Grand Prize shall consist of a trip ("Trip") for up to four (4) band members to California (actual city to be determined) during the month of July, 2010 to play a show (or shows) at an event in support of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ("Movie"). The Trip includes the following: (i) roundtrip ("R/T") economy class airfare for four (4) from the major U.S. gateway airport nearest the winner’s hometown, (ii) three (3) consecutive nights hotel accommodations (standard room, quad occupancy) at a area hotel ("Hotel"), (iii) R/T ground transfers between airport and Hotel. The winning band’s music video may also appear as a bonus feature on the Home Entertainment release of the Movie.

Now you see why there's been a buzzing in the music underground lately - this is a major opportunity, one that could potentially "make" the winner.

And, in my opinion, the winner should be Eleisha Eagle.

Let me backtrack really quick and say: Yes, I did listen to both the songs submitted. I also watched the music videos Eleisha and GGG submitted. In my honest opinion, Eleisha should have this in. the. bag. It seems, though, that this is a classic case of LA versus LA - small town girl versus big town band.

Come on, people, this is a Disney movie waiting to happen!!

Anyway, head over to http://indierockvstheworld.sonicbids.com/UniversalHeadToHead.aspx?b=25 to cast your vote - but do it BEFORE Friday, July 16 at midnight.

Stay tuned, because I've reached out to Eleisha for a Q&A session before the contest ends - let's see if we can get an exclusive with the artist you're all going to wish you had heard about earlier when she makes it big.

For more on Eleisha Eagle, check out her web site at http://eleishaeagle.com.

For more on GGG, check out theirs at www.gorgeousgotagun.com.

Future Jailbirds of a Feather?

That wasn't too long of a wait, was it?

As promised, here is the latest on what's going on right. this. second.

Unless you've been chomping on macarons in Paris like the cast of Gossip Girl or been too busy dehydrating from this heatwave in NYC, it's clear Hollywood has been rocked by a series of celebrity scandals this week.

First, Lindsay. Oh, Lindsay. You couldn't just stay a cute little red-headed faux-twin forever, could you? This past week, Ms. Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in the slammer - a sentence she is hoping to stall, overturn, appeal (basically, she pretty much would like to do anything with the sentence than serve it...unless it was on the rocks. Ouch, that was low. I digress).

While Lindsay is currently interviewing lawyers to help her fight this supposed injustice of the court system, another former A-lister is facing legal woes of his own.

Mel Gibson, more famous for his anti-Semitic and racist rants than his many movie and directorial roles, is facing major media backlash now that certain tapes are hitting the gossip blogs. What kind of tapes, you ask? Well, romantic ones - ones where he threatens to bury the mother of his child in a rose garden.

Over the past few weeks Mel and Oksana have been trading barbs - each accusing the other of terrible, shocking things. Today, an announcement was made that Oksana's dentist is going to testify that Mel is a domestic abuser and was - in fact - beating the woman he claimed to love.

Sheesh. Where have all the goody-two shoes gone? Where are our Dianna Argon's? Where are our Jonas Brothers? Where have - thank you, Pink - the SMART people gone.

The lesson for today, kids? Don't do drugs, miss your alcohol-related probation classes, then tamper with your SCRAM bracelet...for all our sakes.

Only time will tell what will happen to two of our former Hollywood favorites, but only one thing is sure for now: the gossip mongers couldn't be happier!

NOTE: Domestic violence is nothing to take lightly. It has been found that it takes up to seven times for a woman to leave a spouse/partner after he first hits her. If you or someone you know if being abused, please get help. You can find resources here:http://www.ndvh.org/ (the National Domestic Violence Hotline).

They add:
Computer use can be monitored and is impossible to completely clear. If you are afraid your internet and/or computer usage might be monitored, please use a safer computer, and/or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−SAFE(7233) or TTY 1−800−787−3224.

@ClaireMBiggs

Guess Who's Back (Back Again...)

The wait is over.

No, Gossip Girl hasn't returned to grace our airwaves. And wrong again, Lindsay hasn't been locked up yet. The correct answer?

I'm back.

Miss me? No doubt you've been poring over the latest post's from MSMPR 24/7 hoping to see the tell-tale signs of my return. (Where is the overwhelming sarcasm? Where is the snippy wit? Where are all those typos?...Kidding on that last one, folks).

But, seriously. I hope you all are as excited as I am that I'll be blogging here again! And get ready, because this blog is about to be taken to the next level.

We promised you non-stop coverage of all things fashionable, charitable, laughable, PR-able, etc. - and we're going to deliver on that promise. Be sure to bookmark this page as a favorite, because with all the news I'm going to bringing you, you're going to have to try to keep up.

And without further ado (and a tiny bit less good-natured pomp), I bring you: The Return.

And for those of you who now have vintage Eminem playing in your head thanks to the title of this post - you're welcome ;) bet you didn't see THAT one coming, huh?

@ClaireMBiggs

Can You Pitch Me Now? There's A Photo For That!

It doesn't take a public relations professional to understand the power of product placement. It's often silly, it's sometimes ridiculous but it almost always gets the job done. Miami based watch designer "Glam Rock" has coursed recent Miami Heat addition Lebron James into hawking it's new collection of "waterfront-lifestyle-inspired" watches. A pitch letter was blasted from the company for editorial placement and it spent a lot of space explaining who Lebron James is and why he is important. If you have to explain who your celebrity endorser is, doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of product placement with a celebrity endorser? Two words, bad pitch. The included photo of Lebron with the product, posing to show it off is the double cherry on the banana split. See the pitch.

How To Spin Public Relations Entirely:

How many different ways can one say "Public Relations"... here's one way, "Media Strategy Firm". NBC Chief legal analyst, Dan Abrams of Abrams Research recently sat down with CNN's "Reliable Sources" host Howard Kurtz and one of the many topics discussed was the nature of business for Abrams Research. Abrams insists that what his firm does is not Public Relations.
You want to build traffic on your website? You want to keep people there? Here are some things that we think you should do
To Dan Abrams brand management is not public relations. What Abrams Research does very much falls under the Marketing/PR umbrella. Those who do PR are usually proud to say just that, they do "PR". It is what you accomplish that separates you from the pack. Not what you call yourself.

The river in Mogpog

Mogpog river is one of the few tributaries that originates from the municipality's main watershed area. This watershed area is within the periphery of the same earth dam built for the mines that collapsed, polluting the Mogpog River instantaneously in 1993, never allowing it to recover until today. There, the colors of the water range from peach to brown to gruesome red and toxic green or violet ending up in Tablas Strait.

My friend, JR Baculado created a video of the place as it looks today, one that seems to express hope and prayer that growth and familiar flowers that bloom in abundance elsewhere on the island could still find their way into this degraded area one day in the not-too-distant future.

Rebecca Minkoff Gets in Touch With Her Male Alter Ego

Rebecca Minkoff has succeeded in entering our closets and making our accessories the subject of conversations, but now she is going one step forward and making our boyfriends irresistibly stylish. That's right ladies there will be a line designed by Rebecca named Ben Minkoff. The line which will hit stores in October 2010 will feature Leather bags that can be converted from messengers to weekenders for those impromptu sleepovers. The line will also feature small leather goods to ensure that your man's hard earned money is kept as sexy as he is. Ben Minkoff will surely be on my man's Christmas list.

PR Backlash For The "King" ?

Lebron "King" James was an NBA fan favorite across the board until 24 hours ago when he announced he'd leave his hometown and first term NBA team, the Cleaveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat. The people of Ohio and it's vicinity are "hurt" and feel "betrayed" by it's former hero. No one can understand why Lebron would choose a team who already has at least two franchise players other than the idea that he may just want to be in Miami and with his friends. The backlash for the self-proclaimed "King" has already begun with assault on Lebron and his image by Cleaveland Cavaliers team owner Dan Gilbert writing an open letter available on the team website. Many even outside of the area in places that were never considered in his choices feel it was a dirty move. Will the "King" need a strong strategic public relations campaign to accompany him at his new home? Or will his talents carry him through to his first NBA Championship? The fact that the Miami Heat has already sold out it's season tickets says favors the latter. For now.
