Guitar Hero Gets the Ax

Forget about rocking out with a virtual axe; Activision has announced today that the Guitar Hero franchise is getting the ax.

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” said the company in a statement.

The once ubiquitous video game — responsible for making even the best of us dork out and pretend to be rock stars in our living rooms — debuted in 2005 for the Playstation 2 and started the music game genre.

Not only did Guitar Hero appeal to a much wider audience than other types of video games, but it also became the first video game to earn over $1 billion dollars in sales with its 2007 version, Guitar Hero III.

Readers, are you sad to hear about Guitar Hero’s untimely demise? Or are you just bitter because you could never beat Foghat on expert?
