From The Runway To The Big Screen: Rodarte Does Costumes For New Film

Natalie Portman in "Black Swan"

For their Fall/Winter 2008 collection at New York Fashion Week, Laura and Kate Mulleavy - better known as the duo behind fashion label Rodarte - said that their inspiration was a mixture of ballerinas and horror films.

In the new film "Black Swan," starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, the designers got to take those inspirations back off the shelf. Director Darren Aronofsky and costume designer Amy Westcott decided to call upon the duo "to take it to a new level."

In the film, a psychological thriller that revolves around the darker side of the ballet world, Portman plays Nina, a ballerina who is slated to dance the lead role in "Swan Lake." Kunis portrays a rival dancer, Lily, who drags Nina into a twisted, parasitic friendship.

The dark material was a treat for the Mulleavy sisters to sink their teeth into. Particularly satisfying for the duo was being able "to access the psychology of the film in a different way, which was understanding the darker nature and more of the kind of twisted underbelly of that world."

"Black Swan" opened in theaters Dec. 3.
