Marinduque Skies Will Be Bright Tonight

Tomorrow's New Year weekend is expected to be wet according to Pagasa as the northeast monsoon and wind convergence bring cloudy skies and rains especially in Southern Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao and Luzon will experience light rains, it said.

The skies over Marinduque will be illuminated tonight as the clock ticks closer to usher in the New Year, 2011, that most Filipinos believe is still full of hope. Friends of Congressman Lord Allan Q. Velasco are of the same belief, and have organized a 3-minute lights show to emanate simultaneously from all the major parishes in Marinduque's six towns of Boac, Buenavista, Gasan, Mogpog, Sta. Cruz and Torrijos.

The lights show will look like this

New Year's Eve: What Will You Wear?

The new year is upon us, so it's time to figure out what you'll be wearing to those New Year's Eve parties! Of course, sparkle is de rigeur, but there are so many choices: satin, sequins, glitter, and rhinestones. The perfect element of shine really depends on your personality.

Satin: The Sophisticate

You're always put together perfectly, and you embody class. However, you love to have a good time. Show a hint of your fun side with a shiny satin or taffeta dress in a jewel tone such as plum or citrine and pair it with the Christian Louboutin "Canonita" ankle bootie in satin and chiffon ($995 at us.christianlouboutin.com).

Sequins: The Party Girl

Always the life of the party, you love to make an entrance and keep everyone's spirits high. Maintain your presence in a sequined party dress the color of champagne (the drink of choice for New Year's Eve!), such as this one by Aidan Mattox ($295 at Neiman Marcus). Balance the intensity of the dress with some black patent leather peep-toe platforms and a simple black clutch.
Glitter: The Flirt
You know how to catch the eye without causing too much of a stir. You always show just enough to spark interest while leaving them wanting more. Give a flash of your playfulness with the Christian Louboutin "Lady Peep" slingback in gold glitter ($895 at us.christianlouboutin.com). Combine with a strapless black cocktail dress and you're sure to get a (tasteful) kiss at midnight!
Rhinestones: The Glamazon

You have but one simple request: all eyes on you! The word "understated" just isn't in your vocabulary, and any suggestions for you to tone down your look are simply futile. Play up your no-holds-barred style with some equally fearless accessories. Start with a body-conscious dress in a bold, solid color (perhaps a dark pink, to celebrate the official color of 2011, Honeysuckle) and layer on the bling! Try a statement necklace like this gold and crystal style from RichRocks ($95 at www.richrocksnyc.com). Add a strappy gold platform sandal and gold leather clutch and every head will turn as you make your rounds.

So readers, what do you have picked out for your New Year's Eve soirees?

Reese Witherspoon is Engaged

Reese Witherspoon announced yesterday through her publicist that she is engaged to marry her boyfriend, Jim Toth — and she’s got some pretty amazing bling to prove it.

The couple began dating early this year, shortly after Witherspoon’s breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Toth, a Hollywood agent, worked with jeweler William Goldberg to design his new fiance’s custom engagement ring. It features a retro-looking 4 carat Ashoka diamond set on a pave diamond and platinum band (similar to the one in the photo above).

Ashoka stones are incredibly rare, and less than ten percent of these rare diamonds can be cut like Reese’s ring — her rock has 62 displayed facets!

Readers, what do you think of Reese’s extravagant bling?

Paris to Get a Little Shinier

Paris is the city of lights, love, and Chanel. And now, the Musée d'Orsay, one of Paris' landmark museums, will be home to a giant Chanel No. 5 bottle made of 1,200 hand-assembled sequins.

The ad, which will run from January 6-28, will cover 2,890 square feet on the side of the museum and be visible from the Seine.

Do you think the ad is appropriate for the label?

Public Relations: A Brief History

In an article titled "Rise Of The Image Men," business magazine The Economist gives a brief analysis of the public relations industry. Starting with the father of public relations, Ivy Lee, the article chronicles the difficulties faced by the PR industry, such as deciding whether or not a cause should be promoted (the article mentions the Norwegian government's push to bring back whaling) and just how strongly one should persuade (one story involves Ivy Lee making accusations that a union organizer named Mother Jones was a prostitute and brothel-owner).

The article also brings up the more current issue of social media. According to the article, many PR consultants are becoming hopeful that they will create a successful campaign based solely on social media, while "all that is happening is that social-media elements are being added to traditional marketing plans." Ultimately, however, the article presents a hopeful outlook for the future of social media in public relations, stating that "another century of spin, perhaps greater than the one gone by, is in prospect."

Kardashian Covers Sell Big in 2010

If the Kardashian sisters seemed to be everywhere in 2010, it's probably because they were. This year, both weekly and monthly magazine titles have gotten a boost with a Kardashian cover.

Celebrity weeklies, like Us Weekly, Life & Style, and OK!, have covered the sisters fairly consistently all year, which isn't surprising considering their exposure. In addition to "Keeping up With the Kardashians" and after the success of "Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami," "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" will premiere in January. The girls' love lives have also been media fodder, with OK! magazine reportedly paying $300,000 for the rights to Khloé's wedding to Lamar Odom in September 2009.

The surprising figure is the girls' success with monthly titles. According to Rapid Report (through November), Shape Magazine had it's best-selling issue of the year in June, with Kim Kardashian on the cover. W Magazine also saw big numbers, when it featured Kim naked on the cover for its second highest-seller of the year.

The success of these covers can only mean that we'll being seeing a lot more of the Kardashians in 2011.

What about you? Do you pick up magazines with a Kardashian on the front?

Forbes Magazine Names Hollywood’s Highest-Earning Star of 2010

It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that Oprah Winfrey was named Hollywood’s Highest-Earning Star this year.

Topping Forbes magazine’s annual rich list, Oprah earned an estimated $315 million in 2010. Avatar director James Cameron came in second place with an estimated $210 million earned, and filmmaker Tyler Perry took third place with $125 million.

Winfrey’s brand-new network OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) will come to cable this Saturday and will feature big name celebrities like Julia Roberts, Forest Whitaker, and Goldie Hawn.

Rounding out the top ten on the Forbes list were Michael Bay, Tiger Woods, Jerry Bruckheimer, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Beyonce Knowles, and Dr. Phil.

Michelle Branch to Return to Pop Music

Michelle Branch, best known for early-naughts hits like "Everywhere" and "All You Wanted," is planning her return to pop music.

The singer has been in London writing a "fun" and "creative" album with producers Jim Irvin and Julian Emrey, according to Perez Hilton. In a Ustream chat, Branch said, "I have 11 or 12 songs ready to go right now and I'm going to go in studio in January and start recording them. I'm really confident I will have this record out by next summer."

Branch took a break from pop music after 2003's Hotel Paper, which made it to number two in the U.S. She then released 2006's Stand Still, Look Pretty as part of country duo The Wreckers, which featured the hit "Leave the Pieces."

Her newest solo project probably won't include her new country sound, though. Branch said, "This record is more in the vein of my first record, which I would say was a pop record."

Will you be buying Michelle Branch's new album?

Natalie Portman Engaged and Expecting

Not only has “Black Swan” earned Natalie Portman a lot of Oscar buzz, but movie has also given the actress a fiancé — and a baby on the way.

Portman’s reps confirmed to People that she is engaged to her boyfriend, Benjamin Millepied, who she met on the set of the film and whose child she is expecting.

Millepied was a choreographer, and he also played the role of the Prince. He was dating one of the ballet dancers when he first met Portman, but the two fell in love after spending so much time together on set (she trained for five hours a day for an entire year).

Hurricane Anna

Actress Anna Nicole Smith was often described as being a "force of nature." However, documents recently released on WikiLeaks, and published in The Guardian may prove it true.

"Not since Category 4 Hurricane Betsy made landfall in 1965 has one woman done as much damage in Nassau," reads a cable from Deputy Chief of Mission D. Brent Hardt.

The trouble began when Smith filed for legal residency in the Bahamas in 2006. The process, which can take years, only took a month. The application was approved by Minister of Immigration Shane Gibson, who was later found to have accepted a $10,000 check and a $25,000 watch from Smith. In February 2007 (the same month that Smith passed away), Gibson resigned after photos of the two kissing in Smith's bed were released.

After the botched treatment and death of Anna Nicole's son, a few lesser officials were either fired or resigned when it was speculated that the Coroner's Court had covered up the cause of death to protect Anna Nicole from embarrassment.

The leaked cable continues, "Lying in disarray in her wake are Doctor's Hospital, the coroner's Court, the Department of Immigration, local mega-lawyers Callenders and Co., formerly popular Minister of Immigration Shane Gibson and possibly Prime Minister Christie's PLP government."

The last of these confidential cables was dated March 2007, two months before the Progressive Labor Party lost an election despite "a strong local economy," according to the Huffington Post. The cable noted that the opposing Free National Movement "[had] used these scandals to seize the offensive in the run-up to elections."

In the wake of Smith's death, though, the memos conceded that Hurricane Anna did have a positive effect, leading to a "revitalized media" and a more democratic society.

Hillary Swank Announces Plans for Clothing Line

Although she is not an actress particularly known for her fashion sense, Hillary Swank is reportedly going to design her own clothing line, becoming just the latest Hollywood starlet to use her fame to sell merchandise.

Swank's line is in the process of being negotiated, but her business partners at Designers Management Agency (DMA) told Women’s Wear Daily that it will cater to the athletic set (much like supermodel Heidi Klum’s new line for New Balance).

In the WWD interview, DMA co-founder Marc Beckman said, “Our platform is a contemporary, outdoor, athleisure brand.”

It makes sense that Swank, a former gymnast, would choose to design a line of athletic wear for women, but the news still comes as a surprise to many.

Readers, what do you think of Hillary Swank’s upcoming arrival onto the fashion scene as a designer?

Christmas Trees

Tiwanak tree branches washed ashore during stormy weather.

But I have always made tiwanak bamboo Christmas trees in my youth even when all I could do was wrap all their branches with white crepe-paper and hang cut-outs and candy wrappers with round beach pebbles inside to provide the glitter in place of Christmas balls and bells that easily break anyway.

Then I learn years later that cutting boughs of evergreen trees in December was really practiced by pagan cultures thousands of years before the birth of the famous baby in the manger, but only to mark the winter solstice, the time of year that had the shortest day and longest night; that the early Egyptian not having evergreen decorated their homes instead with palm fronds during the winter solstice; that the ancient Romans decorated their trees with bits of metal and replicas of their god, Bacchus, and placed 12 candles on the tree in honor of their sun god.

That Germans in the 16th century brought trees into homes to celebrate their Feast of Adam and Eve on December 24 and brought the practice to America until it became popular in the 1850’s. That it was only in 1923 when the White House started its National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. So I learn that the idea of Christmas trees were eventually brought to these Philippine islands by the Americans in those years.

The Christmas Tree at The Emirates Palace. Photo: AP

Then I hear that early this week, the most magnificent and most expensive Christmas tree in the world costing $11-million was unveiled at The Emirates Palace in Muslim Abu Dhabi. The tree was bedecked with diamonds, pearls, emeralds and rubies along with gold and silver balls and bows. So I surmise that that must be more stunning than Swarovski’s talked –about Christmas tree at the Zurich central station with its 7,000 Swarovski crystals.

The Swarovski Christmas Tree in Zurich.

And I suppose that I should be content for now teaching the young kids to make do with tiwanak Christmas trees with crepe-paper and candy wrappers, cut-outs of stars and candles. There are gifts to find hidden under our unique tiwanak Christmas tree anyway.

"Pauly's World"

Jersey Shore has been a staple of MTV programming since it debuted in August of 2009. But what started as a house full of guidos and guidettes gave us some of the most distinct and original TV personalities and catchphrases. Snookie, The Situation and J-WOWW all seemed like contenders, but it looks like Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio will be the first guido with his own spin-off.

The show will be called "Pauly's World," and will follow Pauly, his road manager, "Big Mike," his bodyguard, Jerry, and Ryan, a childhood friend.

EW reports that a pilot presentation has already been filmed.

Zac Efron Shaves His Head

A Twitter user posted this photo of Zac Efron sporting a buzz cut and dressed as a Marine on the set of The Lucky One. The film, which is based on the Nicolas Sparks book of the same title, is currently being filmed in New Orleans and is set to debut sometime next year.

While Zac Efron fans may mourn the loss of the actor’s lustrous locks, they can take comfort in the fact that his new ‘do is actually for a good cause.

Christmas Party, Games and Presents

With schools closed for the holidays, some Bahaghari neighborhood kids frolic on the beach, their laughter infectious.

In two days, of course, the whole world knows it'll be Christmas. Island people seem extra generous these days, seemingly not conscious of the resulting increase in their electric bill for December. Christmas lights are left a-blinking along the streets all through the night illuminating for the most part only the stray dogs.

'Pidong', 6, John Peter to his classmates, takes a look at some of the gifts yet to be wrapped.

Kids in my neighborhood are excited to learn that they’d be treated to a Christmas party and gift-giving organized by friends, Nestor and Rudy, that they started last year just for fun. Weeks ago, the two wound their way through toys sold at Divisoria, stalls picking out an assortment of dolls, racers cars, helicopters, balls and flying discs, rackets, toy guns, hula hoops, swords, boxing gloves, etc.

It was no joke for them they tell me to wade with huge plastic bags full of toys through streams of humanity there enmeshed in their own fancies or worries. No taxis dared to ply the area as the traffic was hopeless, but the good part was the sight of kuliglig that just came perfectly and quietly when their plastic bags were about to be torn apart.

Really, the sweat and aching feet didn’t seem to matter, as the generous spirit of giving was simply overwhelming for the two, I suspect, thinking only of the smiles on the children’s faces that their gifts would bring. So about 50 kids (there were only 13 last year), 12 years and below are to receive those Christmas presents during a special party and games for them on December 28, Ninos Inocentes Day in my Bahaghari place courtesy of Rudy and Nestor.

Not everyone probably will receive a present like these school children from a village in Sta. Cruz.
...including this little girl.
But maybe one day in the not too distant future all the other Marinduque children will receive their Christmas presents, too, from many more would-be Santa Clauses.

Beatles' Zebra Crossing Gets Protection

One of the most popular sites in London has finally been granted historical protection. The zebra crossing in front of Abbey Road Studios, the site of the Beatles' iconic album cover, has been granted Grade II listed status by a London council.

This status means that it cannot be altered or moved unless by permission by the local planning authority. Tourism and Heritage Minister John Penrose said in a statement, "This London zebra crossing is no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a 10-minute photo shoot one August morning in 1969, it has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage."

The special status follows the listing of Abbey Road Studios as a heritage site in February.

Grassroots Power and Political Dynasties

Marinduque is only one of many provinces in the Philippines that has been dominated by political families. The Center for People Empowerment in Governance, a non-profit group advocates more grassroots participation in politics and opines that these families belong to the country’s economic elite, some acting as rule makers or patrons of politicians, who conspire together to amass greater economic power.

Many members of the dynasties may have developed a sense of entitlement or ownership of certain public positions as is the case in Marinduque, and many people particularly those in the lower strata accept the arrangement, believing that there’s nothing the poor and downtrodden can do about it anyway. Yet, there are also those among them who realize that the continuing poverty is really the end result of political dynasties clinging on to power through election cheating and manipulation that further breed corruption.

It was President Ferdinand Marcos who, indeed, put the blame on the old political dynasties as one of the causes why our society was sick and why there was need for reform. He proceeded to dismantle the old oligarchs who held economic and political power - only to replace them with new ones and cronies, some of them persisting until today.

Julio Teehankee, a political science professor at De La Salle University in Manila, once remarked that "continuing clan dominance is a product of the seemingly immutable and unequal socio-economic structure, as well as the failure to develop a truly democratic electoral and party system." The system is a vicious cycle, he said, one that prevents the expansion of the base of aspirants and candidates for representation. This all amounts to a political system dominated by patronage, corruption, violence, and fraud, he said.

(Newly elected SK youth leaders taking their oath. Rejecting moneyed envelopes.)

But today’s young people have begun their move to unite and challenge the corrosive system that those before them, in helplessness, merely accepted as inevitable. It might have been inspired by the sustained electronic media calls for change and a new beginning, calls that fortunately seem sustained.

Or it could just be an awakening from that long deep sleep.

“Pera lang ang katapat ng mga taga-Marinduque”, was a popular quote attributed to a local politician who referred to the masa’s supposed penchant for money as the only basis for voting.

Yet, the recent barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections here disproved this. The elections appear to be a deliberate and resounding rejection of this notorious character attributed by the politician to the Marinduque electorate.

(Marinduque Congressman Lord Allan Jay Q. Velasco swears into office the recently elected barangay captains, barangay offficers and Sangguniang Kabataan members in the municipality of Gasan. The same exercise was repeated in the other municipalities.)

I therefore take my hat off to the newly elected barangay captains and chairmen of the sangguniang kabataan in the barangay, municipal and provincial levels. They overpowered the political patronage and sponsored money-for-votes system that were very much present, and curtailed them for a fresh start towards ‘change and honor’ and a chance for real grassroots democracy to work.

(Barangay captains of Gasan proved their point and the same gesture was echoed in the four corners of the island-province)

Wife Swap — Shania Twain Edition

Although she won’t be appearing on the ABC reality show anytime soon, Shania Twain’s recent engagement to her ex-best friend’s ex-husband sounds like a real life episode of “Wife Swap.”

Twain’s rep confirmed yesterday in Us Weekly that the country singer is engaged to Frederic Thiebaud, whose ex-wife Marie-Anne Thiebaud left him and married producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, Twain’s former husband (although Mutt and Marie-Anne denied ever having an affair).

After her marriage dissolved, Shania looked to Frederic for support, and the two became inseperable. She wrote on her website:"[Frederic] is a dear friend and true gentleman ... We leaned on one another though the ups and downs, taking turns holding each other up. We've become stronger and closer through it all."

No date has been announced for the wedding.

Model Behavior: Supermodels Team Up To Bring Letters To Haiti

Supermodels and real-life best friends Coco Rocha and Behati Prinsloo are taking a trip together. However, this is no ordinary vacation: according to Rocha's blog, the two will be traveling to Haiti to "spend a few days with the orphans and experience their everyday life."

The trip is a continuation of the duo's work with Lakay Pam, an organization that is dedicated to helping Haitian youth fulfill their most basic needs (food, shelter, education, etc.). Though they have hosted fundraising events in New York for the children of Haiti, they have planned this trip in order to see "what more we all can do," according to Rocha.

However, Rocha and Prinsloo want YOU to be a part of the trip as well!

The duo have asked that people send letters of encouragement to the orphans of Haiti, which they will deliver during their trip. In return, the models will bring back the children's letters to their new "global friends."

40,000 Interviews Later, Larry King Hands Over the Mike

Larry King recently celebrated the end of an era as the famous cable TV personality ended his 25-year run at CNN.

His talk show, “Larry King Live,” was the top-rated cable news show for most of the ‘80s, although it has been surpassed in recent years by Fox’s “The O’Reilly Factor” and NBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.”

In the finale of “Larry King Live” (aired on December 15th), King interviewed former President Bill Clinton and was joined by guest hosts Ryan Seacrest and Bill Maher.

King, who has interviewed every U.S. president since Gerald Ford, has said that he will continue to do specials for CNN in the future.

In the meantime he has handed over the CNN mike — but not his suspenders — to Piers Morgan, who will succeed him in January.

Strangely enough, the finale was not the final episode of “Larry King Live;” a new installment, “The War on Cancer,” aired two days later. The special, which focused on the state of cancer research, was intended to run before the “final” edition but was not finished in time.

Readers, will you be tuning in to watch Piers Morgan when he takes over in January? And what are some of your favorite Larry King moments? Share with us in the comments.

The REAL First Lady: MTV Names Lady GaGa "Woman Of The Year" For Second Year In A Row

Last year, MTV named pop sensation Lady GaGa its "Woman Of The Year." Now, for 2010, the Lady has won the title again.

MTV announced that Lady GaGa received the award again due to her activism against bullying, fundraising efforts for AIDS research, and staunch opposition of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Act.

This year, Lady GaGa became the most followed person on Twitter, and became the first artist to have one billion video views on YouTube.

The network also mentioned some of Lady GaGa's memorable moments from the past year, from performing onstage at the 2010 Grammys with the legendary Elton John to accepting the award for Video of the Year at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards while wearing a dress made of raw meat.

Sarah Palin Says There's a Double Standard for Crying

In an interview with Good Morning America, former Alaskan Governor Sarah said that even today, there is a double standard when it comes to women expressing their emotions.

Palin addressed incoming House Minority Leader John Boehner’s propensity for tears and said that the public deals differently with men and women politicians crying.

“I don’t know if a woman would be given a pass necessarily,” she said. “I respect John Boehner because he has worn his feelings on his sleeve on things that are so important to him ... and I give him that pass, too. But that’s one of those things where a double standard certainly is applied. I’m sure if I got up there and did a speech and I started breaking down and cried about how important it is to me that our children and our grandchildren are provided great opportunities, I’m sure that I would be knocked a little bit for that.”

Readers, do you agree with Palin’s remarks? Have you ever cried in public and been criticized for it?

Best Wedding Video You'll Ever See...Set at Bellarocca

Jun and Vanesa from Bong Sare on Vimeo.

This awesome video might be the best wedding video you'll ever see. The setting? Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa, wherelse, but here in Marinduque.

The wedding couple was Jun Sunga and model, Vanessa Matsunaga, sister of the Brazilian-Japanese model-actor now romantically linked with popular Filipino actress Heart Evangelista.

In an interview on national television Daniel declared: “It’s so beautiful I told the manager of the place that Heart and I would be the next to wed there as I want what my sister had.”

Here's an excerpt of similar quotes made by Daniel along this line from an article that appeared in PEP.ph, bannered "Daniel Matsunaga almost proposed to Heart Evangelista at his sister’s wedding":

(Heart Evangelista and Daniel Matsunaga on the stairs of Bellarocca. Shot courtesy of MangoRed)

"I never cry at weddings and it was the first time that I felt like crying! It’s true because the whole place was perfect and it was just a simple wedding but very elegant. It’s like something from a movie.

"When it was my turn to read something during the wedding, I couldn’t help but cry. But I was wearing my sunglasses, so nobody was aware that I had tears in my eyes. What made me so emotional is that you could feel the emotions of everybody. Even Heart was crying when I looked at her. It was so beautiful that I wanted a wedding like that too.

NOT YET THE TIME

"It was like the perfect moment to ask your girl to marry you, right? But it wasn’t the right time for it yet. I don’t have the ring yet. I will have to save up for it first before I show it to Heart.

"Things like that should be planned carefully. You just don’t jump in because you feel like it. You get caught up in the moment but you get back to reality.

"When I told Heart about it, she laughed and said that there are other perfect moments for that..."

Ah, romance and weddings that happen in an idyllic setting such as Bellarocca Island south of Marinduque.
