Bernie Madoff Speaks

Steve Fishman of "New York Magazine" recently interviewed the imprisoned Bernie Madoff, 72, who’s currently participating in therapy sessions at the psychiatric unit of the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina.

Known around the world as the man whose Ponzi scheme cost thousands of investors and charities over $65 billion, Madoff came across in the interview as disbelieving of his own actions, asking, “How could I have done this? … [Am I] a flawed character?”

Madoff, who fully confessed to his crimes in December of 2008 and is serving a sentence of 150 years, still insists that he’s not the kind of person that people think he is. He seems unsettled by the worldwide perception of him as evil, and even tells Fishman, “I am a good person.”

It seems unbelievable that someone who destroyed the lives of so many, including his own family members, could insist on being a "good person," but then again, Madoff's heinous crimes were pretty unbelievable in their own right.
