A Horse is Not a Woman

Looks like ESPN’s brand new website for women, espnW, got off on the wrong foot — or should we say the wrong hoof? The site (launched in November 2010) recently published a year-end list of the “10 Biggest Stories in Women’s Sports,” naming Zenyatta’s retirement as number 4. But although she may be female and is certainly a very successful athlete (having won 19 races in a row), Zenyatta is a horse.

While the story of Zenyatta’s retirement was certainly newsworthy in the world of sports, most people would probably agree that horses are not, in fact, women — even if they are considered to be athletes.

Readers, what do you think of ESPN’s decision to feature a racehorse ridden by a male jockey in a list of women’s sports stories?
