Huwebes Santo, Abril 1, 2010, 7:30 pm (Moriones Arena, Boac)

Bise-Gobernador Tomas N. Pizarro.

TEATRO BALANGAW featured in “COMMUNITY THEATER: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

Community theater is an important device for communities to collectively share stories, participate in dialogue and to break down the increasing exclusion of marginalized group of citizens. It is practiced all over the world by growing numbers of people.

Eugene Van Erven, one of the world’s foremost experts on Asian political theater, has put together the first comparative study of the work and methodological traditions which have developed in community theaters around the world. It’s an incredibly wide ranging study based on Van Erven’s own experiences working with community theater groups in six very different countries (Philippines, Netherlands, U.S.A., Costa Rica, Kenya & Australia).

“Community Theater: Global Perspectives” provides a sociological impression of the relevant county, a brief history of the community theater there, a guide to the country’s overall arts scene, background of the featured artist, a case study of a specific community theater project. It is an invaluable resource for artist/cultural workers studying or working in the field of community theater.

Chapter I of the book deals with “Philippine Community Theater in the 90’s: A Case Study on Teatro Balangaw of Marinduque”

The City Court

"The City" star Whitney Port was shown working hard on her clothing line is the last season of the show. However, someone is alleging that she may have not worked as hard as she portrayed on the show. Adrienne Baravetto has filled suit against the reality star claiming that the Whitney Eve collection (which she claims was originally named Eve & A) was her creation. Adrienne states that she had an oral agreement with Whitney and her father to design the line and in return she would receive a salary of $80,000 and 25% stake in the company. Whitney's camp have said that the allegations are untrue and without merit. Whitney is going to be dealing with some real life drama, lets see how nice Adrienne can make Olivia Palermo look in comparison.

Sunning aROUND

John Lennon was the first to sport this trend years ago and it's making its way back into fashion for 2010. That's right the iconic round sunglasses are back in full force. Although many celebrities like the Olsen twins were sporting this trend back in 2009 and hasn't caught on until now. Oh has it caught on, the sunglasses are being sported everywhere in Hollywood. The round frames are a great way to add a vintage flair to an ensemble. Summer 2010 is sure to be a luxurious and trendy season with these framing your pretty eyes!

Alexa Chung for "Madewell" Fall 2010

Alexa Chung has made it work for "Madewell," Jean Makers since 1937. Her modeling and TV career have prepared her for everything in fashion and her line has proven to be the anticipation of teenage girls and woman that are "forever twenty-one." With an hybrid style incorporating a youthful school girl look, both adventurous and sweet her concept contains innocent garments that (if styled just right) can compliment any woman. A great way to get everyone excited about Alexa's ability to kill fashion was the kick-off party held at the Bowery Hotel to celebrate the union. Alexa chatted up her models, and danced along to oldies like "Lollipop" and "Leader of the Pack."

Her collection spans super-short shorts, velvet jumpers with Peter Pan collars, schoolboy blazers, prairie skirts, washed-out denim work shirts, polka dots, and stripes. Though, some women may be uncertain about their post-teenage ablilities, it's nothing clever styling or a little mixing and matching cant solve.

I personally cant wait for the collection to hit a Madewell store near me. Apart, from the fact that Madewell is already the perfect store for every girl urban, girly, or indie. Adding Alexa Chung to the sewing room (in my mind) reminds every woman that its not only about your age its about your spirit. With this combination of comfort and style ladies won't be able to find an outfit, or garment that doesn't make them feel good. The collection is set to hit Madewell stores this Fall 2010 so look out for it and tell a friend. For more information on the Madewell brand and Alexa Chung's new collection go to http://www.madewell.com/.

After Patrick McCarthy stepped down as Editor in Chief of W Magazine last week, the fashion world has been buzzing with rumors and front runners of who would be the magazine's next editor in chief. There has been a lot of speculation lately whether the high fashion publication business will survive with the declining advertisement sales as more companies shift to online advertising. Our bet at MSMPR24seven.com is that Condé Nast has a bright future with Anna Wintour and Stephano Tonchi running two of its top fashion magazines. We are excited to see how W will grow and change with the arrival of Mr. Tonchi. His first day is April 12th, so get ready!

What do you think of the hiring? Did Condé Nast and W make the right choice?

Madonna's Shady Business

Madonna has always been known to set new trends and reinvent herself every chance she gets. So it's just been a matter of time until she takes that creativity to the professional world. She has teamed up with Dolce & Gabbana to design a line of sunglasses that is sure to become the new "it" item of the summer. The sunglasses range from $250 to $300 and even sport the new logo MDG. The collaboration of Madonna and Dolce & Gabbana is a gift from heaven and we are sure to embrace it.

Moriones: "Those who forget the past..."

The call made by the Most Rev. Bishop Reynaldo G. Evangelista on his wish, among others, to make Marinduque a Spiritual-Renewal Destination in the near future, and his concern and that of other Bishops to make Easter truly a day of rejoicing starting with the early morning Easter "Salubong" ("Ito po ng ating pinaghandaan...")also puts in perspective a long running conflict between the local church and the provincial government on the introduction of the Black Saturday evening "Sinakulo-Pugutan" introduced in the late 70's.

Numerous articles and essays have been written and published in local and international press, authored by foreign and local scholars that critically examined this festival, particularly, the replacement of the Pugutan street-pageant by the staged Sinakulo, inspired by the Obando, Bulacan original. Some titles:

"Requiem for a Tradition" by Edwin Go;
“The Bloodless Head of Longinus: Political Interventions and the Decapitation of the Moriones Tradition in Marinduque” by William Peterson, a scholarly study that underlines how a century-old tradition was drastically changed in one sweep by political intervention;
“Holy Week in the ‘Heart of the Philippines" by William Peterson on spirituality, theatre, community and the Moriones Festival;
“Change and continuity of Moryonan in the context of tourism : a case study of culture process in Marinduque, Philippines” by Patricia Nicholson that warned about the tradition already losing its authenticity becoming less of an attraction to foreign tourists; and
"Moryon: Panata sa Likod ng Maskara”, (2002), by Danilo Mandia which underlined how a political figure he described as "kumbistador ng kultura" used power to the extent that "nanaig ang kapangyarihan at nagawa ang gustong gawin ayon sa kanyang pansariling kagustuhan”.

The paper underlined the enmity created between the provincial government and the local Church as both competed for the Black Saturday audience with the church remaining critical.

What exatly did the local Church have to say? Exerpts:

Nais niya itong tawaging The Bible Story. “Senakulo would be a folk art” (Reyes, 2001. Panayam)

“I was called by the parish council, why I was changing tradition? Well, I said, performers were the ones who requested me to show to the people their performance in the evening by means of follow-spots... follow spots ang curtain.

Ay yoon namang Senakulo ay salvation history, from creation to the resurrection” (Oliverio. 2002 Feb. 25)

(Malapad. 2001 March 2)

(Serafin Malinao, 2000 Dec. 27. Panayam).
